I’ve been neglecting social media lately, so I thought I’d start a new series to force myself to post more 🙈 I want to share my crochet experiences, and if you’re interested in learning crochet but don’t know where to start, hopefully, this series will help you!

First, let’s introduce crochet!
Unlike knitting which involved two needle-like sticks, crochet is weaving with a hook. You hold the yarn in your left hand and the crochet hook in your right. The crochet hook has a little hook at the end. Crochet involves using this hook to create loops, and the patterns look different from knitting. Currently, no machines can make crochet work, all crochet work are made by humans. Please appreciate all the time and effort crochet designer put in their works! It takes time and practice to make every work!

There’s no clear historical record of when crochet began or where it originated. However, patterns started circulating in the 18th century, and even Queen Victoria of England crocheted herself. It’s generally believed that crochet was passed down in homes long before that, making it a centuries-old craft. Initially, crochet was mainly used for lace, but now you can find crochet in clothing, accessories, toys, and decorations.

Once you get into crochet, you’ll discover a whole new world! Not only can you make many things yourself, but new techniques, patterns, and yarns come out every year. It’s a constantly expanding universe!

Next, let’s introduce various crochet work. The world of crochet is vast, and I don’t know how to make all of them as well. Everyone prefers different crochet works, so feel free to try different crochet projects you enjoy.

  1. Lace
Lace can be made in a lot of ways, and one of them is crochet. Compared to other crochet work, online resource are slightly fewer, yet, you can find books in crocheting lace. If you are a complete beginner, start with thicker yarn and gradually move to thinner yarn. I haven’t tried making lace myself, so I’m not sure about the difficulty. Generally, the thinner the yarn, the more practice it requires.
  2. Granny Square
A classic crochet pattern and often the first project for many beginners. Besides the basic pattern, there are many other granny square patterns. For example, Sunburst flower pattern, African flower pattern, daisy flower. I recommend searching for “granny square pattern” as there are many books and online resources in all kind of languages.
Another attractive part of granny squares is the color combinations, which can give the same pattern a completely different style. Once you’ve made several squares, you can join them to create blankets, vests, bags, or jackets. Learning granny squares involves understanding how to read crochet charts, where each stitch has its symbol. Once you master this, you can follow patterns in any language~
  3. Clothing
Surprisingly, clothing can be a good starting project. Start with basic items like a long-stitch vest or hat, using the same stitch and repeat until desired length. The most challenging part of making clothes is getting the size right. Make sure measure your size and choose yarn suitable for your local weather. In Asia, making a vest for yourself is very appealing, whether for layering or wearing alone. Adding ribbing to the edges can significantly enhance the finished look. There are even yarns suitable for swimwear, perfect for summer.
  4. Toys
This is what I work best~ Crochet toys have a unique cuteness that sets them apart from regular toys. The best part is that there are many free resources, and you can buy patterns you like. Once you learn to read written instructions, making toys is quite easy. With practice, you’ll develop a sense of 3D shapes, making it easier to design your own toys.
  5. Microcrochet
If you enjoy intricate details and have good eyesight, try microcrochet! It uses embroidery thread, and although the technique is the same as regular crochet, the fine thread requires steady hands and good eyesight. Be prepared for the fact that the finished products will be tiny. Microcrochet is often used for making earrings, accessories, and small decorations. Using a white light while working can be helpful.
  6. Pixel Art
A great choice for those who love 2-dimensional designs! Pixel art makes use of the grid-like feature of crochet and changing yarn colors to create designs reminiscent of old RPG games. It offers a lot of freedom and can be designed and planned using technology. There are online resources and software available in English, you can create your own pattern!

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I’m eager to learn more about the vast world of crochet!
